MIC 2020

Made In Color is a series of projects that started back in 2014 with an initial goal of exploring color through digital art & illustrations. The norm of the project quickly became about experimenting with contemporary color schemes to create striking compositions. Like all sectors affected by the COVID – 19 pandemic, we had to rethink & redesign the whole project in accordance with the ‘new normal. Before, Made In Color projects were a collection of digital prints by artists all across Kenya that were sold in major exhibitions to raise funds for selected charities. This year, however, different illustrators came together to create a free coloring book to be distributed to specific children’s homes, youth groups & churches. We also made a digital copy to be sent to our subscribers and other interested parties upon request.

Task

The challenge of the project was to find a perfect blend between the different styles used by the artists. From abstract illustrations to surreal compositions we consulted together to try and come up with a mixture that will be inclusive to everyone. Since this book is the first of its kind in Kenya there were no limits on what could be done. This gave the project an exciting edge. We were able to distribute over 300 copies (digital & hard) to children which helped keep them engaged during the Covid nationwide lockdown.
